Winter Solstice 2007
Oh, the dark days. And the long cold nights.
The winter always seems to come down so fast.
You can feel it start to fall at Halloween, then drop like a rock after Thanksgiving.
Plus there is always some sort of little surprise.
There
is always some way, no matter how prepared we were - or thought we were
- that we get surprised by something we somehow didn't expect at
winter. But
don't worry, baby, it's all good. Whatever your personal variation of
those pesky winter surprises are this year, somehow it will
all work out.
Part
of it is just the energy of the wintertime. Remember, the winter is the
time of both Saturn and Jupiter, and these two are very different
critters. Ruler of Capricorn, Saturn is the God of planning, of
prudence, and of putting in a good day's work. Ruler of Sagittarius,
Jupiter is the God of luck, of being fun and frivolous, and of a great
party. Put those two together at this time of year and you can manage to rise to the occasion and still have fun with it.
The Winter Solstice occurs this year on Friday, December 21st. Positioned
exactly halfway between the Spring and Fall Equinoxes, the Winter
Solstice is when the days are shorter and scales are tipped toward the
side of the night. Winter abounds in feelings much akin to stumbling
around in the dark and fumbling towards ecstasy, which is fine, as long
as we get there. Winter wants us to figure it out. Especially that
Saturn/Capricorn part. Saturn and Capricorn want results.
As
families and communities, at this time of year we have to figure out
how to come together for the good of the tribe. That's just the deal.
Winter wants you to have some sort of rebirth, some sort of Ebenezer
Scrooge-type conversion experience, some sort of epiphany or aha moment
that leaves you clearer about your connection to the larger forces of
the world and your role in it. And, preferably, happy about it. Or
at least at peace with it.

Saturn
and Jupiter want you to remember your roots and your history, the good
and the bad. They want you to always be mindful of the lessons learned
from mistakes of history.
And
they want you to remember the best practices gleaned from the successes
of history, especially as you look to and plan for your future and your
next moves.
Regardless
of whatever else is going on with astrological transits - and trust me,
I will get to that in a moment - the generic winter solstice energy is
the context that the rest of it all sits in. Winter Solstice is
the beginning of the math equation. Add it to the energy of the
transits, which are so heavily Cancerian this year, and you have a
recipe for a real traditional holiday season. |
|

The Spirit of Cancer
One
of the most interesting astrological issues of this year has
simply been the sheer volume of retrograding planets. This year
there has pretty much always been something - and usually a group of
somethings - in retrograde. The upside is they have really forced
us to slow down and become (or develop the skills to become) more
patient with and present to the people and things that we have been
heretofore unable to face or attend to.
But
to truly work with these energies in a masterful way you have to look
to the planets and the signs involved. As both Mars and Mercury spent
time in retrograde in Cancer this year, and Mars is still retrograde
there, it would be wise to focus here. While
in other years it was more optional, this year you really have to use
and respond to the Cancer energy in order to have a happy holiday
season.
This
year, the surprises of winter seem to be coming primarily from our
homes and our families, which are the primary domain of Cancer. In
clients, I am seeing this play out the most often around a change in
the balance of power in whatever political systems govern said group. Followed closely by who is angry and about what. Followed closely by real estate and mortgage issues.
So let's look at Mars for a moment. On
November 16th, Mars - ruler of anger, aggression, violence and war -
went retrograde. And he's still retrograde, and he will be until the
end of January. Now I really hate it when Mars is retrograde over the
holiday season, because it means that we all will have to be on our
best behavior during those holiday get-togethers and family reunions.
No fight-picking, and no initiating conversations about taboo topics
over dinner. No digs, sniping or guilt slings, that sort of thing.
You just have to button it right up. There is no wiggle room, no
buffer, no insulation and no margin for error. When Mars is retrograde
over the holidays, you just have to be a trooper. When Mars is
retrograde in Cancer over the holidays, you have to be thinking Medal of Honor.
This
winter you have to be a Bodhisattva. You have to practice putting aside
your wounds and needs and try to be present and understanding with all
those bat-shit crazy people at a much deeper level. You get to practice
having mercy and compassion for whatever their sad sick little personal
weirdnesses are. You get to try to imagine what it would be like to
live in their skin for a minute, and then be grateful that you don't.
I
am seeing a lot of people having conniptions and conundrums around
feeling like they have had their noses rubbed in whatever the family
dookie was. Again.
Sorry, man. This winter you just have to deal. You know it's time - that the proverbial writing is on the wall - when the new mantra of your 16 year-old -on and his friends has suddenly become "deal with it." Thanks, boy-os.
The
upside is that Cancer rules the emotions and the intuition and the
heart. This holiday season more than any in recent memory, you really
have permission to trust you gut, to open up your heart and shut off
your head. |

Families and Communities.
These
words traditionally speak to the heart of our holidays. But
this year, with all the retrogrades - especially in the sign of Cancer
- that emphasis is stronger than ever. And at this particular Winter
Solstice, when there is so much social, political and economic change
afoot, there is no other real priority.
But
don't loose sight of yourself. After you have tended to the family and
family matters, give yourself equal time. This is, after all, a
time when we are assimilating and integrating what we have learned
about what we have harvested this year. This
is a time when we are beginning to envision what we seeds we want to
plant in the coming year. This is the time when declare and
claim we want to be, to do, to have and to experience in the
coming year.
So dream on, baby, and dream big. Stay strong and focused and connected to your soul's core. And if you get stuck, call me. We'll figure it out.
Don't forget! Every year in December I sell gift certificates
for half price. During this month, you can buy as many as you want and
there is no expiration date. And you can use them however you want: as
gifts for those you love or as a gift for yourself - either as an ace
in your pocket, a hedge against a future slump, or a part of a clearly
set intention to have a better strategy for success in the New Year.
Regardless of your reasons, if you would like to purchase some, please
call me at 805-963-0842.
May you and yours have magical holiday season! |
