The Winter Eclipses 2009 - 2010:
Making Peace with All They Reveal
I was not going to write about this duet of winter eclipses, I just wasn't. Despite the volume of WTF correspondence, despite the requests for just a brief word, despite the extra complications of both a Mars and a Mercury Retrograde. I was in no mood. Much
of what is in the historical record is fantastically dark and
erroneous, and much of what contemporary astrologers say is freakishly
dark and without redemption. I just wasn't up to the task of mucking
around in that mess long enough to find the light of it. While I have
pretty much always let the reader's questions guide my steps, this time
I just didn't have the time, the spine, or - more importantly - the
attention span.
But
as the first of this winter's eclipses occurred while I was on my
seasonal sojourn in Arizona, an unlikely muse interceded. Or perhaps a
series of them. While stuck in some of our nations' finer airports and
car rental agencies - thanks to the underwear bomber, a false alarm at
SkyHarbor a few days later, and that Trickster Mercury - I got
inspired. Or perhaps it was an advanced tutorial. Regardless, I am now
sufficiently inspired. I do some of my best writing on the road, anyway, so let's do this thing.

Historical Interpretations
Even
though eclipses are some of the more regular and visible of our annual
astronomical events, the ancients did not know or understand that. Not at all. Despite the sophistication of some of their observatories, the ancients
apparently did not understand that all eclipses are not visible in all
the worlds' places each time they occur. Or that eclipses usually
happen (at a minimum) in pairs about six months apart at least twice
each year. Usually long periods of time elapse - sometimes generations
- between sightings in any one region. As a result, many ancient people
would not see or experience a visible eclipse in their lifetimes, much
less a dramatic one. This teeny little misunderstanding of this teeny little detail created highly mysterious, albeit highly mistaken, interpretations of the nature and purpose of the eclipses.
As
a result, the ancients believed eclipses to be very rare, and as such
one of the more magical, mysterious and powerful ways the Gods warned
mankind of things to come. Seriously. Since man began divining, the
surprising and seemingly unpredictable nature of the eclipses made them
one of the most powerful portents in history, if not the most powerful. And the most scary. Eclipses were not seen as the type of Angel-Gabriel-bearing-tidings-of-good-news, sorts of warnings. Oh, no. Generally the eclipses were considered to exclusively negative omens,
if not portents of downright evil. Most frequently they were considered
the heralds of war, crop failure and famine, and the death of a king.
Now that we can track these things more accurately, both astronomically
and statistically, I am happy to say most of the ancient beliefs on
eclipses do not pan out. |
|

Contemporary Interpretations
These
days, most people do not have the same sorts of superstitions about the
eclipses - especially the more visually dramatic ones. But there is
still a lot of curiosity. While there is a lot of information about how
ancient people viewed the eclipses, and why, it is much harder to find
clear, current information about how contemporary astrologers interpret
them. Research-based astrological statistics and case studies about
eclipses are few and far between. There is just significantly less
information available than there is on other transits and events.
Sadly, most contemporary astrological researchers and writers on the
subject consider eclipses to be primarily a negative influence,
heralding a death, a loss, a disclosure, an accident or an illness.
This is especially true if the eclipse occurs within two degrees of one
of your natal chart points, particularly the Sun, Moon, Rising, or
Midheaven. Or,
lest we forget, within range of a Mars or Mercury Retrograde. While I do
agree the degree of conjunction determines the intensity of the event,
I have some serious disagreements about the ways the event impacts your
life.
Specifically,
I don't believe the negative events that happen to people experiencing
a direct conjunction of an eclipse are as impactful as what the events
reveal: that someone we love and trust was lying to us, and that we
were lying to ourselves. I continue to think the biggest impact of an
eclipse is the transparency it creates. Yes, the events occurring
before and between the eclipses are big. Tres grande big.
Life-changing big. But what the events reveal are usually much bigger.
While this generally can feel bad as it occurs, but in the long run
usually isn't. Seriously. The best antiseptic is, after all, the light
of day. Finding out someone has lied, stolen, cheated or bailed out in
some way can be devastating. But I truly believe ultimately it is
better to know the truth so you can be empowered to make the best
possible choices - certainly better ones than you would have made had
you not known. You simply cannot truly move on or at least move forward
in the fog of deceit or delusion.

My Interpretation:
Eclipses are the Antidote for Neptune's Fog
I
do believe that interpreting and utilizing eclipses and their energies
can be one of the most helpful applications of modern astrology. And I
find it particularly helpful in working with groups of people:
families, companies, communities. Honestly,
during the eclipses, when our inner deceptions and delusions become
unsustainable, what I see most in individual clients is an awakening to
something that has been going on for some time: loved ones with secret
affairs and addictions, previously unknown embezzlements, debts or bank
accounts. With small business clients, I see a lot of business owners
and partners finding out about the same sorts of duplicities, often
with more zeroes before the decimal points. In corporations, civil service sectors and political circles, I see a lot of the same plus mutinies, territorial plots, corruptions, espionage and subterfuge, fiscal mismanagement, as
well as manipulation of elections and legislation by lobbyists and
special interest groups. If there are other transits involved,
especially retrogrades we have now, the impact will be greater. There
will be more epiphanies and revelations.
A
word here about definitions and the difference between an epiphany (the
hallmark of the Mercury Retrogrades) and a revelation (the hallmark of
the eclipses). Yes, I know. For most of you this may be splitting spiritual hairs here, but the Virgos will understand (God, I love you
guys). There is a very distinct difference, and in the interest of
precision, it would be good to take little peek. For me, an epiphany is
a sudden insight, a brilliant new intuitive understanding, an "AHA"
moment. During the retrogrades, especially those of Mercury, your
ability to consciously override your unconscious mind lessens, and you
can have a lot more epiphanies. It is more internally driven. During
the eclipses, something external occurs, which causes something that
was in the shadows to be forced out into the light. Something external
is revealed. And if you can stay calm and present, that will in turn,
reveal something internally within you. For clues as to that, you look
at the astronomy and astrology of it.

Creating Strategies, Phase One: Do The Math
Like
any other transit, an eclipse will activate the area of the chart in
which it falls for you. You want to look first at the signs and the
houses the eclipses transit, as well as any conjunctions, squares or
oppositions they create to natal chart points. So you will want to be
paying attention to that in much the same way you do with Mercury's
Retrograde. And when you do, if you find that the Sun or Moon of an
eclipse does not fall within two degrees of anything in your natal
chart, the revelations of this time period will most likely be much
more impersonal and benign. For those of you who are not as directly
affected by a set of eclipses, keep your head down, your eyes and ears
open, and don't gloat or judge, as your turn will most assuredly come.
Find your inner Buddha/Christ/whatever, and try to lend a hand to those
who are more affected. For those of you who do have more of a direct
impact, well, let's tawk, shall we?
For
those of you who find the Sun or Moon of an eclipse occurs within two
degrees of anything in your natal chart, you will definitely want to be
paying close attention (code for call me, STAT) to the
things going on in your life. It is also a good idea to do some serious
pre-emptive detective work: read a whole lot more of the fine print,
and ask a whole lot more questions than you are currently asking. Be
humble, don't assume you know what is going on, don't take unnecessary
risks, and play your cards closer to the vest than you normally would.
And, as always, hope for the best, know your limits and risk
tolerances, and prepare for the worst based on them, so if the worst
does occur, you are not caught short and scrambling.
|
|

So
with all that said, let's start by looking at where the eclipses of the
winter of 2009 - 2010 are occurring, so you can chart a proper personal
course. The first one was a Lunar Partial Eclipse that occurred at
11:22 am PST on the morning of December 31st. The Moon was full in
Cancer at 10 degrees, the Sun was exactly opposite at 10 degrees
Capricorn. This eclipse was said to be visible in most of
Australia, Asia, Europe and Africa. This one was made more intense
not only by the Mars and Mercury Retrogrades, but also by the Sun and
Moon both squaring Saturn at 04 degrees Libra.
The
next eclipse, which will occur January 14th at 11:06 pm PST, will be a
Solar Annular Eclipse, meaning the Sun and Moon will be almost exactly
conjunct. In this one, the eclipse will occur when the Sun is at 25
degrees Capricorn and the Moon is at 24 degrees Capricorn. This one is
visible in Central Africa, the Indian Ocean, Southern India, and China.
At the risk of sounding overstating the obvious, any of you who have
anything anywhere near those locales in your natal chart should be
really, really, really calm and present. Especially around the energy
of theses two eclipses: Cancer and Capricorn.

Creating Strategies, Phase Two:
Find the Grace
Regarding
the Capricorn part, Capricorn rules goals and ambitions, especially
material ones. Career, business and finance, in particular. And on a
bad day, Capricorn rules greed, selfishness and the lines we will cross
(or have crossed) to get what we want. Needless to say, lately I am
seeing a lot of clients having all sorts of revelations and epiphanies
about that. Sometimes it is that we didn't realize what we were signing
on for. Sometimes we truly did not understand what it would take to
achieve our goals. Sometimes it is the realization that the goals we
were pursuing have become obsolete. Sometimes they were the wrong goals
all along, and you simply have to acknowledge and let go of that
delusion. Sometimes it is more that the goal is sound, but the route by which
we had hoped to get there has been revealed to be faulty, more
complicated or in some way inadequate, and we need to find an alternate route.
Exactly across the sky is the
constellation of Cancer, and as you would expect, its domain is almost
exactly the opposite of Capricorn (though, interestingly, both are
driven by the quest for safety). Cancer rules your home, your family,
your emotions and intuition. These days I am seeing a lot of clients
with experiencing familial changes - often quite suddenly. Deaths and
divorces, foreclosures and job losses being the most common. Cancer
also rules nationalism, and the concept of security. Again, regardless
of what area you are working in, with the benefit of hindsight, it is
always clear that there were clues and warning signs along the way that
were missed. Don't be too hard on yourself, but learn the lesson.
|
|

In closing, the annual eclipses, the month before them and that crucial two week
period between them is a time when more is being revealed, often in
epic proportions. Sometimes on a daily basis. And it can feel a lot
like being on a moving sidewalk, or the book of Job. The trick is to
reframe it - for it is truly the way out of your dilemmas and the only
way to attain your goals. Because of the involvement of the moon and the sun, the eclipses show you many aspects of the things those planets rule. As the signs of Capricorn and Cancer have dominated
the eclipses for the last year and will continue to do so for at least
another, smart money would have you put some focus on their dichotomies
and juxtapositions: dad/mom; career/home, public life/private life;
fear/courage; strength/vulnerability; leading/following.
This
whole winter scenario has reminded me more than once of a minister who
guided me in the 1980s. Her take on it was God loves you more than you
love you. He truly does. And He wants to give you more than you could
ever ask for - He wants you to have more than you want you to have. But
He wants you to be able to keep it. He wants you to be able
to sustain the love and the prosperity, not lose it the way most people
do. And the pain that you are suffering on the path you are on is
simply God's way of getting you there, of helping you build the skills
you need to be able to do that. The things that are revealed in these
eclipses are where you are in your own way - where you need to let go
of something to get something better, even though you may not be
exactly clear what the better thing is just yet. So keep looking to the
stars to light your way, and if you get stuck, call me. We'll figure it
out!
