The Summer Eclipses 2010: Devils and Details, Shadows and Light
Okay,it's time.
The Mercury Retrograde, and it's pesky shadow period, are finally over, Summer's Solstice is upon us, the eclipses are here, and the WTF
calls are coming in harder than Daniel Bard's fastball. Don't worry,
the joys of summer you waited so long for are not imperiled, they just
are looking a little different than you had expected. That means it's
clearly time we had a little chat. So first, let's start with some
context.
This
time of year is generally a time to give your soul it's fullest
expression. Summer has a magical way of making us clearer than ever as
to who we are, and how we relate to our God and our fellows, and it is
therefore easier for us to freely be our authentic selves. In the
Northern hemisphere, the warmer weather and a bit of a break from the
normal school and work schedules don't hurt, either. But when the eclipses are in the mix, you have to go at the self expression thing a little differently.
Somewhat more conservatively. It's just not as wild and exuberant,
largely because you have to keep your eyes open and watch what is going
on around you. Part of it is that, much like the
retrogrades, the squirrely energy of the eclipses makes it harder than
ever to stay grounded and centered in your corporeal body, making
things more physically dangerous and emotionally challenging. And part
of it is that even when you are adequately warned and grounded, you
just never quite seem prepared for what is coming at you. |

How it Works: The Who-What-Where-When-and-Why
But let's rewind and review. Eclipses
happen at least twice a year, usually in pairs that occur about 2 weeks
apart. Astronomically, there are a number of different kinds of
eclipses, but all of them involve shadowy interplay between the Sun,
the Earth, and the Moon. Astrologically, the eclipses are transits that
show you something previously hidden and inaccessible to you. Usually several somethings.
And usually those revelations have at least a little something to do
with precisely where you are your own worst enemy: where you are a
casualty of your own hipness, where you are creating your own chaos and
drama through those giant twin turbo engines of obliviousness and
denial. At their most basic, the eclipses will show you your shadow and
your light: as above, so below; as outside, so inside.
You
can pretty much always count on at least one of those
soon-to-be-revealed somethings being an external one, and at least one
an internal one. Usually in that order. On the external level, there
will be some sort of catalytic occurrence that changes your perception
of your external world, and therefore your reality: a sickness, death
or loss, the discovery and disclosure of political deals, inept
leadership, infidelities, lies and omissions, corruptions and
betrayals. There is always a spike in your awareness and understanding
of these, at both macro and micro levels. Then that usually triggers
the internal awakening, revealing where and how you were tacitly
complicit via one of your various denial mechanisms: where you were
doing your ostrich thing, or pretending to be Sergeant Schultz from
Hogan's Heroes ("I know nu-think!!!!!). Again, like all transits, the
eclipses bring a lot of training opportunities, and they are
also a time when miraculous, fab-tastically good things happen. So pay
attention. It helps to look to the signs involved and the realms they
rule in order to determine where the astrological equivalent of the
impact zone or cone of uncertainly will likely be. |

Doing the Math
Okay,
now the details and the devils that accompany them. This set of
eclipses is, frankly, just beyond intense, simply because there are so
many signs and planets involved. The first eclipse is a Lunar Partial,
occurring on June 26th at 4:38 a.m. PDT. The Moon is both full in Capricorn and conjunct Pluto at 04 degrees. And
both planets are exactly opposite the Sun, which is at 04 degrees
Cancer and just happens to be loosely conjunct Mercury at 02 degrees
Cancer. ACK! Enough already. The second eclipse is a Solar Total,
occurring on July 11th at 12:33 p.m. PDT, when the Sun and the Moon are both conjunct in Cancer at 19 degrees.
Regarding the
Capricorn part, Capricorn rules goals and ambitions, especially
material ones. And on a bad day, it rules greed, selfishness and the
lines we will cross - or have crossed - to get what we want. As the
winter eclipses were also primarily in Capricorn (and Cancer), I am
still seeing a lot of clients embroiled in revelations and epiphanies
about that. Sometimes we didn't realize what we were signing on for.
Other times we truly did not understand what it would take to achieve
our goals. Still other times we realize the goals we were pursuing have
become obsolete. Sometimes they were the wrong goals all along, and we
simply have to acknowledge and let go of those delusions. Or perhaps
the goal itself is sound, but the route
by which we had hoped to get there has been revealed to be faulty, more
complicated, or in some way inadequate, and we need to find an
alternate route.

Exactly
across from Capricorn is the constellation of Cancer, and as you would
expect, its domain is almost exactly the opposite of Capricorn. Cancer
rules your home, your family, your emotions and intuition. Given that,
Cancer is sort of famous for fight or flight. Cancer will either freak
the heck out and run screaming like Futurama's Doctor Zoidberg, or turn and attack as fiercely as William Wallace's highlanders. There
is simply no grey area. Though Cancer and Capricorn dominate these
eclipses, there is a strong Gemini influence, so you may feel some
ripples there as well. Ruled by Mercury, Gemini is famous for missed
cues and delayed reactions. And information. So let's add it up,
shall we?
Basically
you have a transit that is all about too much information, involving
signs and planets that rule too much information. Okay, my brain hurts already.
Throw in blind panic, fights, family, money, family
money, and blind-panic-driven fights about family money, and
you're gonna need an icepack and a lot of aspirin. Seriously.
Especially around your blood kin. This transit can have roughly the
same effect as the Slim Whitman music did on the Martian invaders in Mars Attacks. I got three words for ya, baby: exploding green goo.
At the very least, you can expect to have a moment or two where some
new family financial disclosure will have you grasping your aching head
with both hands and shrieking in horror. |

Finding Your Way: Making Peace
with What is Revealed
In
closing, these days I am seeing a lot of clients experiencing massive
familial changes - often quite suddenly. Factor in Mercury's messages,
Capricorn's material influences and Pluto's relentless intolerance for
the superficial, and I am seeing some, ummmmm, patterns here. Deaths and divorces, scandals and foreclosures, job and financial losses - even the loss of beloved pets - all
sorts of life events that force families and neighbors to come together
and form a more functional whole. Again, with the benefit of hindsight,
it is always clear that there were clues and warning signs along the
way, many of which we somehow managed to miss.
This summer's duet of eclipses, and the revelations they bring, just have a magical way of illuminating everything,
ready or not. Suddenly all the spider webs and dust bunnies in all
the dark corners of your world are just right out there for all to see.
Especially you. In a general, very generic and somewhat experiential
way, the eclipses are the antidote to the Mercury Retrograde. Seriously.
Both transits work to your benefit, and their goal is the same - to get
you to pure (or at least purer) consciousness. But they work in very,
very different ways. Pretty much diametrically opposite ways. The
retrogrades make things funky, foggy, miserably murky, hard to see and
even harder still to grasp, obtain or attain. Especially material
things. The cloudiness and lack of clarity created by Mercury's
retrogrades force you to abandon all but the most necessary and mundane
activities and be right here in the proverbial now. In all it's urgent
glory, and in absolute loving allowance. Amen.
The
eclipses, however, go at it from an entirely different direction. They
force you to open your eyes and ears, your heart and mind to things you
have heretofore not seen, not heard, and/or not known. Or had the
capacity to. The eclipses burst whatever your biggest, most
self-destructive denial bubble is, ready or not. They expand your
capacity to be present and your ability to deal. And that leads me to
my prescription for this transit. There is only one: just be committed
to being abso-freaking-lutely, exceptionally, Braveheart smart. Seriously.
If you were a Scottish clan, your motto would be "Don't do stupid
sh*t." It's not what you know, it's what you do with what you know. And
lord knows, there is plenty to do. There are great karmic completions
happening, and opportunities to finish things that have been
languishing or that you have out and out resisted or rejected. So do
them, do them right thing, and do them right the first time. And be
humble about it. With a capitol H. Keep looking to the stars to light your way, and if you get stuck, call me. We'll figure it out!
