Spring Equinox 2007

This year the Vernal or Spring Equinox occurs in the Northern Hemisphere on March 20th.   As always, the Spring Equinox marks the halfway point between the depths of winter and the heights of summer. This is the day the sun crosses the equator moving northward, and is one of only two days a year when the daylight and the darkness are the most equal in length. In fact, the word we use for these moments  - equinox - comes from the Latin words aequus (equal) and nox (night) or "equal night."

Like the solstices, the equinoxes are a time of tremendous release. During the periods in between the solstices and the equinoxes, productive and creative energies gradually build, much like steam building in a tea kettle. By the time the solstices and equinoxes roll around something has just got to give. While these moments are many things, the most important is that they are a time of fuller - sometimes even fullest expression. This is not a time to be a repressed wallflower.

Unlike the retrogrades, the solstices and the equinoxes provide a brief moment of clarity. This is a moment when you can sort of get a glimpse of where the road is going (always a plus). It is a time when you can get a taste of what lies ahead and what is to come:  the good and the bad, the glorious and the wretched. Note to self - make corrections as needed.

In ancient times, the Spring Equinox was considered to be the time when you finished preparing the fields for planting and then sowed the seeds for the season. Ceremonies were held to ensure the crops were blessed, as well as to court the strengthening power of the Sun.  Also central was the theme of growing the abundance of the people, their farms, and their communities. Key to this was taking appropriate actions on both the material and the spiritual levels as the new planting cycle was planned and prepared.

As we are no longer primarily an agrarian society, the seeds we are now planting may be more figurative than literal. But the same rules still apply. Be grateful for what you have, be clear about what you want to harvest in the fall, plant the right seeds, and tend to them lovingly. And if you get stuck, call me. We'll figure it out.

Ongoing Stellium in Aquarius & Pisces

Yes, it's still happening. I know you are all getting pretty sick of this one, and it's not going away anytime soon, so I would be remiss if I didn't say a few words about it. So here we go.

To review, whenever there are a lot of planets in one sign, it significantly increases the energy of that sign AND your experience of it. Because most of the transiting planets are outer planets, ruling the aspects of life you came here to learn and master, there are big changes afoot. People are having breakthroughs and epiphanies all over the place, especially men and especially men in relationship.

Aquarius rules revolutions. He is the bringer of change, the master of curve balls and wild cards and all the things you just don't see coming. While not generally considered malefic in the traditional sense, the changes Aquarius brings generally leave us feeling shocked and unprepared, even violated.

Pisces also has the noblest of intentions - though somewhat different ones. He wants to make us all one. He wants to unify. But he does it by blurring the lines and erasing the boundaries that define us. He removes the things that make us uniquely different. Now, this isn't so bad in small doses. After all, modern dance pioneer Martha Graham used to say that the most exciting, dynamic and powerful things happen when you are just slightly off kilter.

A little foray into that now and again is healthy and even smart. But a couple of months of it has left most folks dazed and confused, like you've lost part of your identity and you don't know who or what to trust. It's high time to redefine those things, thinking outside the box and with a new awareness of and respect for our precarious interdependency.

In periods like this, with so much emphasis on change, so much energy in the elements of air and water - and especially with a Mercury Retrograde thrown in the mix - it can be really hard to ground. And even harder to remember who you are or who you were trying to become. Don't give up, keep trying. And if you can experiment with different things than you normally would. Now is a time to be very patient and have huge balls. Huge.

In closing, don't forget that the two eclipses in the last month have - as they are prone to do - revealed much. During the eclipses, that which was hidden becomes apparent, and secrets come out. This happens to us as individuals, as a nation, and as people sharing a planet. We are, I believe, finding ourselves, finding lost parts of ourselves. We are coming home.

And not a moment too soon. Above all, this combination of Aquarius and Pisces creates the perfect environment for alchemy: there is much magic here. There is much magic to be made here.

A large part of the chemistry equation is - as always - gratitude. I am seeing people work absolutely amazing miracles by making more room in there lives for the appreciation of what is. Keep your focus on what you have and on what you love.

I want to thank you for your trust, and for the great honor you do me by allowing me to be part of you processes.  And I remain inspired by the epic heroism you display as you rise to these occasions. Keep watching the stars, and thanks for showing me the way!

Sincerely,
