Samhain 2007

This issue revolves around the ancient holiday of Samhain. Now breathe, baby and don't get me wrong. I am not talking about any aspect of Satanism, those awful horror flicks, or the punk band. Seriously. Just so we're clear.

Before the word got hijacked and bastardized by all those other folks, Samhain was a bona fide holiday.  For the Celts of Ireland, from whom I am descended and about whom I am particularly fond, Samhain was not just any holiday, it was the holiday. One of the Cross-Quarter or Shabbat days, Samhain lies halfway between the Fall Equinox and the Winter Solstice, and it was the most sacred holiday in the Celtic Pagan calendar. As the last of the three harvest festivals (after the Fall Equinox and Lughnassa), Samhain was celebrated at the end October and the beginning of November, marking the end of both the summer and the harvest time.  As such, they believed this time was the end of one annual cycle and the beginning of the next, as well as the advent of winter. Because of that, Samhain was officially the time of their New Year's celebrations and observances.

If that isn't enough, there is another layer of significance for Samhain that is probably the biggest on at least spiritual and metaphysical levels. All of the Solstices, Equinoxes and Cross-Quarter Days are considered to be portals, a time when the walls between the differing worlds of this life and the afterlife are thinner. But Samhain is believed - of all the portals - to be the biggest and most powerful, the time those walls are at their absolute thinnest.

At this time everyone's natural psychic abilities are stronger and it is the easiest to make and have contact with the souls of those who have passed over. As such, it is a natural time to remember, honor and communicate with those souls belonging to our truly beloved dead. Because of this, later cultures would turn this holiday into All Souls Day or All Saints Day which is November first each year. Later, the night before became Hallowmas or Halloween. This year, the Lunar Samhain is at the next new Moon, which is Friday, November 9th.

So now what, you ask? I think this time of year can be a very confusing one to most folks. On the hand, on a more primitive level we feel the intuitive tug this season brings, but on the other hand we don't know quite what to do with it. This time of year I see a lot more people reporting psychic experiences and vivid, powerful dreams. And for many of us, the current celebrations hold little meaning, or at least, not enough.

For those of you who are needing a little more than a lot of candy and a good party, this is a real good time to spend a little time remembering those who have passed on and honor the contributions and sacrifices they made on our behalf. If you don't have one already, make a special place or altar in your home that you can dedicate to the memory of those past. In, on and around these places, put their pictures, memorabilia and items that remind you of the joy you shared together. Say a little prayer for them, or a big prayer, or a series of them as needs dictate, and thank them for all they have been and done and given. In your prayers and meditations, ask these spirits to guide, direct and protect you and your family as you close out this harvest season and prepare to begin another.

Mercury Retrogrades in Scorpio & Libra

With that said, when you factor in the Mercury Retrograde in Scorpio and Libra, and you have a fall season that is very highly charged, psychically and spiritually. The Fall Mercury Retrograde started October 12th at 9 degrees Scorpio and lasts until November 2nd when it goes direct at 23 degrees Libra.

A fixed, feminine, water sign, the domain of Scorpio is one of great depth and power. It's realm is the both the sacred and the profane.
Scorpio is the lord of transformation and change, metamorphosis, and the Phoenix rising from the ashes. Scorpio rules death, darkness and the afterlife, metaphysics and the great mysteries that drive the world's universal truths. This is a no-bullshit zone. When there is a lot of energy in Scorpio, things get very real very fast. Scorpio cannot abide by or endure superficiality, and it wastes no time.

But this time, thankfully, Scorpio is not the only factor at work here. It's a little more than half, but not the whole enchilada. Thank you God.  This fall's retrograde is somewhat tempered by Libra, which is a cardinal, masculine, air sign. This brings both an urgency to restore balance and an attempt at doing so with a modicum of graciousness.

Historically, Scorpio-Libra Mercury Retrogrades are characterized by politics, passions, powerful ideologies and, of course, a lot of technical difficulties. These retrogrades have traditionally been a time when nations are born, alliances are forged, new political movements arise, strikes end, treaties are signed, armistices begin, coups occur, and riots and protests are violently put down.  As a result, this fall's Mercury Retrograde in Scorpio and Libra is ever so politely demanding that you kill off some old and busted part of you so that some new hotness that is waiting in the wings can be born. This is your official invitation to create your own personal The-King-is-dead-long-live-the-King, as they used to say, moment.

In closing,
between all this energy in Scorpio and Libra, the current Mercury Retrograde and the Upcoming Mars Retrograde, smart money would say do a preemptive strike on whatever issues happen to be yours around anger and change.  Seriously. And don't say you don't have any, or that you have already dealt with them. We all have them, and - not to minimize the work you have already done - you can always go deeper. Especially now.

Interestingly, much of this newsletter evolved during a recent trip to Kauai. The Hawaiian Islands are such a great place to write about the cycles of life and timelessness.  Especially for me - -it's sort of my Dagobah. There is something about this island that is so ageless, transcending time and space.

Born of the violence that is volcanic eruption, it has seen wave after wave of invaders and intruders - from bacteria, plants and animals to humans of various races, nationalities and agendas. It is all part of the cycles of life, which are at their core so very simple and elemental and perfect. I think the problem most of us have with cycles is we get shortsighted about them, and about how the cycles are not about us, they are bigger than just us. Much bigger than us.

It was both very interesting and very surreal to be returning from the tropical island paradise that is Kauai to the hellish apocalypse that Southern California has become during these fires. And at Samhain - the official end of one cycle and the beginning of the next - with such a massive Scorpionic emphasis on transformation and redemption. On the one hand, it's just cycles. Things change, we change. It's a little freaky at first and then we figure it out. But on the other hand, it's been a long time since I lived such a graphic metaphor.

It will be interesting to see what phoenixes rise from these ashes.

Most of contemporary spirituality and religion is based on ancient spirituality and religion, which have their roots in the annual natural cycles of planting and harvest, which are based on the cycles of the Sun and Moon. So in our lives, though we may no longer be farmers literally, we still are figuratively. Metaphorically.  Perhaps now a more appropriate term for it may be manifestation cycles, rather than harvest cycles. Regardless of what you call it, our labors on and with the earth  - just as those of our ancestors - are about manifesting our spiritual, emotional and material sustenance. And the same rules still apply. Reflect and ruminate on what you planted last spring that gave you this particular harvest. Be clear about and grateful for what you have harvested this fall.  Stay strong and focused and connected to those you love. And if you get stuck, call me. We'll figure it out.

Sincerely,
