Is it Weird Enough Yet?

As Mercury rules Gemini, and Gemini rules writers and writing, this Mercury Retrograde in Gemini has found me revisiting some of my favorite bards and scribes. The most appropriately inspirational one turned out to be the late Hunter S. Thompson, founder of Gonzo Journalism. But not for the reasons you would expect. While there are many, many, many wild and wonderful sayings attributed to him, the one that stands out right now is "It never got weird enough for me."  Now there's an interesting point of view. Those are words most folks would never utter. Ever. But I'd like to invite you to start. Or at least try to try to being thinking about trying to think like that.

Especially around the retrogrades. Especially the retrogrades of Mercury. Especially this one. Honestly, guys, most people approach these transits with so much fear and negativity, and that is just not helping. So I am extending a personal invitation to a big giant reframe. And a new strategy.

Now for those of you who are new to this or new to me, just one of my personal one-woman campaigns is to reframe the discussions and perceptions of astrology, in general, and the Mercury Retrogrades, specifically. Seriously. I am not doing this to provide you with one more thing to use to stay afraid, or self-victimize. Most of us don't need any help with that. This is not about becoming a paranoid freak, or more of one. This is about choosing differently. And stepping up.

The thing you have to remember here is that astrology is a tool, just like anything else. Don't become a junkie about it. Astrology is supposed to enhance your personal power, not render you impotent without it or make you incapable of independent thought. And don't spend too much time in shock or in some sort of post-traumatic stress response. Honestly. Everyone goes there now and again, but don't camp out. You are not helping anyone if you stay small.

So, for you Virgos out there, who are into the details, Mercury went retrograde on Memorial Day. Which was Monday, May 26th at 8:48 a.m. Pacific Time, to be exact. It turns retrograde at 21 degrees Gemini, and it goes direct June 19th at 7:31 a.m. Pacific Time, at 12 degrees Gemini. For you uber-Virgos, who already have you calendars out and are counting up the days, it comes to 25 days. Yeah, baby, I know. This one is kind of long. Just breathe. And use the time for what it is meant for.

Like baseball, or investing in the stock market, astrology is an awful lot about probability and statistics. All we are really doing in each of these areas is using mathematical information about the history of past performances to determine likely present and future outcomes. That's all. Given that, you'd be smart to at least consider it as part of your planning and decision making process. And you'd be sort of stupid not to.
Mapping it Out

So how do you go about that, you ask?
Review the facts and formulate a plan. This is, after all, the prelude to the harvest season. As Mercury rules Gemini, and therefore is retrograding in it's own sign, this retrograde will be much easier to map out because you are only dealing with one basic energy. So you start out by looking at that. What follows is a Generic Guide to Mercury Retrograde Activities, especially when it is in Gemini:

DO:
·         Slow down
·         Under schedule
·         Rest
·         Spend time with those you love
·         Do things that are meaningful
·         Catch up with those whom you have
          been disconnected
·         Clean up, clean out and reorganize
          your physical spaces
·         Creative, artistic
          projects
·         Be out in nature
·         Spend more time in spiritual pursuits
·         Spend less time in material pursuits
·         Budget extra time and money for
          travel and for projects
·         Be extra patient and courteous in
          traffic
·         If you travel, make it an easy trip to
places that nourish you with people
          you love and enjoy
·         Spend more time reading
·         Spend more time listening and
          observing
·         Reach out to others as is appropriate
·         Spend time revisiting your New Year's
          goals, resolutions and the intentions
          you set for the year
·         Research
·         Focus on your intuition
·         Back up your hard drive

DON'T:
·         Create or add to existing pressure
·         Redline, rush or push to meet deadlines
·         Make big decisions the far-reaching
          implications
·         Negotiate and sign contracts
·         Open or close escrows
·         Buy big ticket items or anything you
cannot easily return if you change your
          mind
·         Start a new relationship or end an old
          one
·         Manipulate or do spin on anything
·         Give birth, have surgeries, or any major
          dental or medical procedures

With that said, normally we then add in the particulars to the hosting sign. And I just love this part. Again, as mercury is retrograding in it's own sign, we can effectively skip that step. Or maybe not skip it, just do it different. In this case, instead of adding more numbers (or energies) we take the numbers we already have and multiply them by themselves.

In a nutshell, Gemini rules travel and transportation. It rules bookkeeping, accounting and the stock market. It rules communication, communities and neighborhoods, siblings and cousins. On the physical level it rules arms and hands, lungs and eyes. And it rules your mind: how you think and perceive and process things. Mercury in Gemini is brilliant, quick, exceedingly versatile, and a master magician.

ganesh

Mercury Retrograde in Gemini, tragically,  is not. It's more famous for brain farts and flights of fancy. And those pesky, annoying, and embarrassing tragedies that stem from somebody being lazy or stupid, delusional or unclear: auto, air and space accidents, mass murders, terrorism, suicide bombings and serial killings. Even things such as certain political choices regretted later (don't get me started, there just isn't enough space or time).

With that said, then the fun really begins. Then you look back over history to see what happened when Mercury was retrograde here in Gemini in order to determine what you can expect during this one. Here are a few things that we already know are on the radar screen, places where you can expect surprises or where things may not go exactly as planned.

Ongoing Choices by SuperDelegates:  This is the place where I am expecting to see the most political weirdness. Seriously.  If there are going to be shenanigans, it will be here and it will be now.  Part of that is there are General Elections and Primaries June 3rd in Puerto Rico, Montana, South Dakota and California. Another place you could expect some of the proverbial fear and loathing is the State Conventions. Nearly all 50 states are having State Conventions during this period.

Summer Party Season:
Father's Day happens this year during this time, as do many High School & College Graduations. And for those of you who are members of the wedding mafia, the wedding season is in full swing. Solstice and July 4th are within the echo period. Be very, very smart about how you celebrate, and .about what you do while under the influence. And how you get home.

Annual and Special Events: As most of the national air and space disasters have been during a Mercury Retrograde, I have concerns about NASA's Phoenix Spacecraft mission on Mars going off exactly as they had planned. Thankfully no one's life is at stake. As the Mercury Retrogrades, especially those in Gemini, usually herald in increase in terrorism, and somehow Spain has been a target in the past, I would expect some sort of incident during the Expo 2008 in Spain.

Let It Be

So where do you go with that? Slow down. As Mercury's Retrogrades can be the astrological equivalent of Ramadan or Lent, slow way, way, way, way down. You be present, be humble, be grateful; you do the work, and you find a way to make it fun. Be the Master Magician by looking for alchemy in what gets weird.

After all, these things are, by their very nature, mirrors. They show you where you are shooting yourself in the foot, and they give you the opportunity to choose to stop doing that. The degree to which this is a bad thing is only measured by your resistance. And by your failure to learn from your mistakes.

The way I see it, not only are we always in some sort of a process, we are always in some specific phase of a process.  And the things you are feeling are just the gifts and lessons of whatever one we are currently in. I have noticed over the years that it isn't enough to have a textbook knowledge of the signs, planets, and transits. As human beings, we are driven by our emotions. To really master astrology you have to understand the gifts and the lessons of a transit AND the emotions involved.

I have come to believe that the best way to make these energies more understandable to people is to at least spend a little time describing how things feel - or can feel - especially to the different signs.

When I was literature student and later a journalist, I became enamored with the innovativeness of Hunter S. Thompson, the founder of Gonzo Journalism. I admired his surrendered conviction that as a human being you simply cannot be completely objective about those people and things you are observing. It seemed to me a logical extension of things many of his predecessors  - and many of my heroes - had concluded, everyone from Walt Whitman to Margaret Mead. Due to the feedback I get from clients readers, I am sort of becoming a Gonzo Astrologer, in that I make transits understandable on both a technical and a feeling level. Albeit with significantly fewer substances involved and less time served.

So given that, please accept my latest offering. Once again, I want to thank the community that nourishes and sustains me. I appreciate those of you who have shared the burdens and joys, sacrifices and surrenders, and most of all the wisdom and grace. Especially those of you I have worked with in the last two weeks. As Mercury retrogrades, we are being called upon to change. Period. And I am reminded that whatever else is going on, necessity is the mother of all invention, and in order to invent and innovate you really have to draw on Aquarian and Aries energies to do that. These guys invented "Adapt and Overcome." Or as my son started saying after learning to kayak, "Emergency Maneuvers." I am particularly grateful to you with so much Aries and Aquarius in you who continually show me the way to the open door. And then push, pull or drag me through it. You know who you are.
Blessings -
